Water damage drying time has no fixed number of days. It depends on what got wet, how much of it, and how long it sat before equipment started. Most jobs run several days, not one visit, and a few questions come up on almost every one of them.
Can I turn the fans off at night?
Not usually, at least not in the early days. Air movers and a dehumidifier work as a pair, one pushing moisture out of the material and into the air, the other pulling it back out of the air. Shutting them off overnight lets that moisture settle back into whatever it just left, and the next day often starts closer to where the last one did. Equipment running through the first stage matters more than any single hour of it, and emergency water removal pressure-tests what that first stage actually looks like once a crew is on site.
The carpet feels dry. Why is the equipment still running?
Surface-dry and actually dry are two different things. A moisture meter reads what’s happening inside the material, not just on top of it, and carpet backing or the subfloor underneath can hold water long after the top layer feels fine to the touch. Equipment stays in place until that reading, not a hand test, says the job is done.
When does furniture come back into the room?
Once the floor and any lower walls read dry, furniture can usually go back in stages, starting with pieces that never got wet in the first place. Anything that soaked, especially upholstered furniture or particleboard pieces, is a separate call. Some of it dries fine; some of it doesn’t, and that decision leans on the same readings the rest of the room does.
How long does drywall actually need, compared to carpet?
Wet drywall needs to be fully dry within about 24 hours. Carpet and the pad beneath it get roughly twice that, close to 48 hours, since both hold more water from the start. That gap between the two numbers, a distinction that traces back to the EPA’s own guidance on preventing mold rather than any single company’s house rule, is part of why equipment often keeps running on one material after everything else in the room has already cleared.
What if it still smells musty after everything dries?
A lingering musty smell after equipment leaves is worth a second look, not something to paint over or mask. It can mean a small pocket somewhere never fully cleared, even if every reading in the open room came back dry. If a smell sticks around, mold after water damage nails down when that’s still ordinary and when it’s a sign something needs another look.
Central Texas air conditioning is already doing half the job
Running the air conditioning during a dry-out isn’t optional in this climate; it’s doing real work alongside the equipment. An AC system pulls humidity out of the air the same way a dehumidifier does, just slower, and keeping it set at a normal temperature instead of shutting it off gives the drying equipment less to fight against. A commercial-grade setup still moves faster than a home AC and a couple of box fans ever could. Calling lines up a crew with that heavier equipment for your specific rooms, not a guess at how many fans a job might need. For how many of those equipment days show up on your final number, there’s more in the restoration cost guide.
Common questions
Does opening the windows speed anything up?
Usually not, and in Round Rock's humidity it can work against the equipment. Outside air often carries more moisture than the air the dehumidifier is already pulling out, so an open window can add to the load instead of shortening it.
Is a room ever dry faster just because it's small?
Size matters less than what's in the room and how long it sat wet before drying started. A small closet with soaked drywall can take about as long as a bigger room with only a wet floor.
Can I check the equipment readings myself?
Some equipment shows a number, but knowing what that number means for a specific material takes some judgment. A moisture meter reading on drywall isn't read the same way as one on subfloor.
Does a dehumidifier alone finish the job without fans?
Rarely on its own. A dehumidifier pulls moisture out of the air, but air movers are what push that moisture out of the material in the first place. Most jobs run both together.
